Bérangère Fromont: I don't want to disappear completely
Summer, 2015. A Latvian village lost in the middle of endless forests of birches.
I meet a group of teenagers. They are bored during their long and hot days of holidays.
I photograph the contrast between the brutality of places – the cracked roads, the walled up windows, the abandoned houses, the invasive and phototoxic plants – and the fragility of bodies.
Ghostly presence in a dry and motionless landscape in time, fireflies glittering at night. Aiva, one of the girls of the band, tells me spontaneously stories on this village; stories of ghosts and haunted houses. "I’m afraid of nothing, i’m afraid of ghosts".
I don’t want to disappear completely takes the form of a palimpsest where the ghosts get involved in the alive, the past in the present to reveal a new reality, a new resolutely poetic narrative, where the photographic act is similar to an act of survival.
